City of Fresno Apartments and Rented Condos go SMOKE-FREE
On October 14, 2021, the Fresno City Council passed a local law that bans smoking in multi-unit housing. This policy will take effect January 1, 2022.
Who does the local law apply to?
- Apartment Tenants
- Condo Renters
- Renters living in properties that have more than 2 units and that share a wall
Where is smoking banned?
- Indoor Common Areas: halls, pathways, lobbies, elevators, stairs, community rooms, gym facilities, parking garages, parking lots, restrooms, laundry rooms
- Outdoor Common Areas: courtyards, playgrounds, swimming pools, tennis courts, grassy or landscaped areas, picnic areas
Where is smoking allowed?
- Exclusive outdoor areas: private balconies, decks, porches, or patios
- Designated smoking areas: outdoor areas 20 feet away from playgrounds, swimming pools, tennis courts, picnic areas, doorways, ventilation systems, windows, and air conditioners
For people living in multi-unit housing, up to 60% of the air they breathe can come from neighboring units. If a neighbor smokes, that means they’re breathing in secondhand smoke, which can cause a variety of health problems in people of all ages.
